What is the National Organic Program (NOP)?

The National Organic Program (NOP) is a program established by the US Department of Agriculture to regulate the production and labeling of organic crops and products. The program was established in 2002 and is enforced by the Agricultural Marketing Service. The NOP sets standards for how organic foods are grown and processed, as well as how they are labeled and marketed. Under the NOP, organic production must meet certain criteria. For example, organic crops must be grown according to specific standards that promote soil and water conservation and protect the health of the environment. Organic crops cannot be grown with synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, or other prohibited substances. Additionally, organic processors must adhere to strict guidelines with regard to the storage, handling, processing, and packaging of products. In California, the NOP is enforced by the California Department of Food and Agriculture, which ensures that organic products sold in the state meet the NOP standards. This includes approving and certifying farms, processors, and handlers that produce, process, and market organic products. Additionally, the Department of Food and Agriculture conducts random inspections and testing to ensurethat products labeled “Organic” are actually produced according to the NOP standards.
