What international laws apply to aviation security?
International aviation security laws are designed to ensure the safety of passengers, personnel, and cargo while they are travelling via aircraft. In Washington, the main international law that applies to aviation security is the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The ICAO is a United Nations agency responsible for developing and harmonizing standards for aviation security globally. The ICAO sets standards for aircraft security that member states must follow through its Annex 17 document. This document sets out specific measures for things like passenger screening, air cargo security, access control, and limiting aircraft access on the ground. Member states must also implement proper training for their security personnel and provide effective measures for monitoring irregularities. In addition to safety standards, the ICAO also sets standards for aircraft performance, flight procedures, reporting, communication, navigation, and search and rescue operations. It also helps to develop standards and regulations for airspace control, navigation aids, and air traffic control. These standards help ensure the safe and efficient operations of airplanes and all associated elements of air travel. The ICAO is responsible for developing and continuously improving aviation security standards, and all UN member states are responsible for implementing these standards in order to ensure the safety of everyone travelling via aircraft. By doing so, member states can ensure that all passengers, personnel, and cargo travelling via aircraft are protected from risk and harm.
