What is the process for obtaining an aircraft type rating?
In Colorado, an aircraft type rating is required for pilots who wish to fly certain aircraft. To obtain an aircraft type rating, first the pilot must take a written exam to demonstrate understanding of the aircraft type. This exam covers aircraft systems, performance, and limitations. After passing the exam, the pilot must complete an approved type rating course. This consists of ground school, which includes instruction and simulator training. The ground school gives the student pilot the knowledge and skills needed to operate the aircraft safely. The simulator sessions allow the pilot to practice flying the aircraft and develop proficiency. Next, the pilot must pass a practical test. This is conducted to confirm the pilot’s knowledge of the aircraft type and proficiency in handling the aircraft. During the flight test, the examiner will simulate a variety of scenarios and maneuvers to test the pilot’s competency. If the pilot passes the practical test, the type rating is granted. In Colorado, an aircraft type rating is valid for 24 calendar months from the date it is granted. To maintain the rating, the pilot must fly as pilot-in-command or second-in-command of the same aircraft type at least once during that time. If the pilot fails to do this, he or she will have to retake the written and practical tests to retain the rating.
