What is an answer?
An answer is a response to a complaint in a civil court case. In Hawaii, an answer is a document usually prepared by the defendant in a civil court case. The answer must be formally filed with the court in response to the complaint. The answer must include a list of each allegation in the complaint and then either an admission or denial of each of those allegations. For any denial, the defendant may raise defenses to why the claim cannot be proven. The defendant may also raise counterclaims against the plaintiff in the answer. The answer also serves as a notice to the plaintiff that the defendant has been properly served with the lawsuit. By filing an answer, the defendant is generally able to participate in the lawsuit, and will receive further notice of hearings or other court events.
