What is an accommodation request?

An accommodation request is a request for a particular modification or adjustment to a job, program, or service to allow a person with a disability to better utilize it. In South Carolina, disability law ensures that those with disabilities can receive accommodations that are necessary for them to participate in an activity, program, or service. An individual or organization can make an accommodation request to ensure this access. Examples of accommodations can include providing a sign language interpreter for someone who is deaf or hard of hearing, allowing a service animal to accompany a person with a physical disability, and providing Braille materials for someone who is blind. An accommodation request may also ask for a change in the physical space or a change in the way an activity is conducted. For example, an accommodation request may ask for a ramp or elevator to access higher floors or for written instructions to be provided verbally. It is important to remember that an individual with a disability has a right to request an accommodation for accessibility, and organizations must make reasonable accommodations to ensure accessibility for all. In South Carolina, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the South Carolina Human Affairs Law (SCHAL) provide legal protection for people with disabilities and apply to state and local government agencies, businesses, and non-profit organizations.
