What is an individualized education plan (IEP)?
An individualized education plan (IEP) is a document created for students who are identified as having a disability and in need of special education services in California. The IEP outlines the student’s current capabilities, educational needs, and identifies any special services the student will need to succeed in the educational environment. The IEP is developed by a team of school and district personnel, including the student’s parents or guardians, with input from the student. The IEP must include a statement of the student’s present levels of academic achievement, any special services and programs the student is eligible to receive, and the student’s needs as they relate to the disability. It also must include measurable annual goals, evaluation procedures, and timelines to measure progress. The IEP is designed to be a living document that is updated annually to reflect the student’s changing needs and abilities. The IEP is a vital document in California disability law that helps ensure a free appropriate public education (FAPE) for students with disabilities. It is essential to ensure the student receives the services and support they need to succeed in the educational environment.
