What is employment discrimination law?
Employment discrimination law is a type of legal protection that protects people from discrimination in the workplace. This type of law applies to all employers in Washington who employ more than eight employees, as well as to state, local, and federal agencies. It protects workers from discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, and age. Employment discrimination law helps protect employees from unfair treatment such as being passed over for promotion due to their race or gender, not receiving pay equal to their peers, or being harassed or discriminated against due to their disability. This type of law helps ensure that everyone is treated equally in the workplace and that employers don’t use their power to discriminate against any employee. Employment discrimination law also gives employees the right to file a complaint if they believe that they have been discriminated against in the workplace. This complaint can be filed with the Washington State Human Rights Commission. The Commission will investigate the complaint and can order the employer to provide remedies to the employee, such as back pay, front pay, or a promotion, as well as requiring the employer to take steps to make sure similar discrimination does not happen again.
