What is a hostile work environment and is it illegal?

A hostile work environment is an environment in which an employee is subjected to intimidation, humiliation, ridicule, or other forms of abuse or offensive behavior. This type of behavior can make it difficult to do your job, and it can create a sense of fear or anxiety in the workplace. In Virginia, employers are prohibited from creating a hostile work environment, and it is illegal for an employer to subject an employee to unwelcome and offensive behavior based on certain personal characteristics, such as their race, age, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, or other protected classes.
