What is education reform?

Education reform is a term used to describe changes to education systems in order to improve student learning and to provide more equitable opportunities for students from different backgrounds. It involves making changes in the structures, policies, and practices of education systems to improve student performance and outcomes. In California, education reform has been an important focus for the past decade. One of the primary areas of change has been the implementation of the California Basic Education System (CBES) which was created in 2004 to ensure basic education standards in schools across the state. The CBES includes core academic standards in math, English language arts, science, and history-social science, as well as requirements for high school graduation. Additionally, the CBES includes provisions aimed at helping increase student access to college and job opportunities, such as providing additional resources for low-income and English language learners. Other areas of reform have included increasing standards for teacher certification, expanding access to early childhood education, establishing measures to improve academic accountability, and developing college and career pathways for all students. Education reform is an ongoing project in California and across the United States, and it is continually evolving as new strategies and approaches are tested and implemented.
