What are the rules regarding the disclosure of campaign contributions?

In Virginia, campaign contributors have to disclose the source of their contributions to the State Board of Elections. The rules for disclosure are outlined in the Virginia Campaign Finance Disclosure Act. It requires that all persons, entities, candidates, and campaign committees report all contributions received. This includes money, in-kind contributions, and loans. The disclosure must include the amount and date of the contribution, the name of the contributor, and the address of the contributor. For contributions exceeding $100, the employer and occupation of the contributing individual must also be listed. Contributors are not allowed to remain anonymous, except in certain specified circumstances. The Board may require that campaigns provide additional details about contributors if there is a suspicion of illegal activities or if the contribution is from an out-of-state political committee. This is done to prevent money laundering and other forms of fraud. In order to ensure transparency and to prevent corruption, all campaign finance activity must be reported to the Board in a timely manner. Failure to comply with the disclosure requirements can result in hefty fines, as well as criminal prosecution in some cases.
