How are delegates chosen?

In Virginia, delegates to the Republican and Democratic National Conventions are chosen through a two-step process. First, the state holds a “primary” election in which voters select their preferred candidate. The candidates who receive the most votes in the primary then become the official nominees for their party. After the primary, the state holds a “caucus” or “convention” to determine which delegates will represent the state at the national convention. At this event, delegates are elected based upon their support of a particular candidate. For example, a certain number of delegates may be allocated for the candidates who received a certain percentage of votes in the primary. In addition to elected delegates, each party also appoints additional delegates. These delegates are usually party leaders, such as state legislators, and they are appointed by the party’s state committee or leaders. These delegates are also expected to support their chosen candidate at the national convention. It is important to note that although the delegates represent a particular candidate at the national convention, they may still vote differently when the convention votes on the final nominee. This means that the final nominee is not necessarily the same as the candidate with the most delegates.
