What is the difference between a union and a non-union workplace?
In Virginia, a union workplace is an environment in which employees are members of a labor union. A labor union is an organization of workers that work together to protect and promote the conditions of their industry or profession. Labor unions negotiate with employers on issues such as wages, hours, job security, and benefits. Every union member has a voice in the negotiation process and can vote on issues affecting the workplace. A non-union workplace is a workplace without a labor union. In a non-union workplace, the employer and the employees negotiate the terms of their employment without the assistance of a labor union. This means that the employer has more control over the terms of employment and the employees have less job security. In Virginia, some employees are allowed to organize and join labor unions. Unions are most commonly found in professions such as construction, manufacturing, and transportation. Union members in Virginia can be legally protected from unfair or unsafe labor practices, while non-union members often have no legal protection.
