What is the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)?

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a civil rights law that was passed in 1990. This law protects people with disabilities from discrimination in employment, state and local government services, public accommodations, and telecommunications. The ADA in Hawaii prohibits any employer from discriminating against a person with a disability in the areas of employment, including, but not limited to, hiring, firing, promotion, compensation, job training, and other terms, conditions, and privileges of employment. Additionally, the ADA requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations to those with disabilities to enable them to perform their job duties. A reasonable accommodation is any modification or adjustment to the work environment so that a qualified individual with a disability can perform their job duties. Under the ADA, employers must make sure the workplace is accessible to those with disabilities and provide assistive technology that would enable them to work safely and effectively. Employers must also provide appropriate training to all employees so that they can better understand how to interact with individuals with disabilities and how to create an environment that is welcoming and inclusive for everyone.
