When can I request FMLA leave?

In Virginia, you can request FMLA leave if you have worked for your employer for at least 12 months, and have worked for at least 1,250 hours during that time. Additionally, the employer must have at least 50 employees within a 75-mile radius of your worksite. If all of these criteria are met, you can then request FMLA leave. This leave can be used for a variety of reasons, such as caring for an ill family member, dealing with a birth or adoption of a child, and even for your own illness. When requesting FMLA leave, you should give your employer as much advanced notice as possible, usually at least 30 days. Additionally, you may need to provide proof or documentation of your requests. It is important to keep in mind that FMLA leave is unpaid and does not provide job security, so you will need to make sure you are financially stable to cover the time off.
