The Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment is an international agreement that seeks to protect individuals from torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. In California, the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment is part of the Human Rights Law. At the international level, the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment was adopted in 1984 by the United Nations. It seeks to protect individuals from all forms of torture, or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. Furthermore, the Convention ensures that individuals who have been subjected to such treatment are guaranteed the right to an effective remedy and the right to compensation.
