What is the right to health?
The right to health is a human right enshrined in law in Washington. This right means that everyone has the right to have access to the health services they need in order to maintain the highest possible level of health and well-being. This includes access to medical care, good nutrition, housing, a clean and safe environment, and access to essential medicines. The right to health also includes the right to the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health. This includes the right to health education, to access health services and information, and to have access to work environments that are free of hazard and provide fair wages and conditions. The right to health also encompasses a range of social and economic rights, meaning that everyone should have access to healthcare services and medication, regardless of their income or social circumstances. This includes access to sexual and reproductive health services, and the right to make decisions about our own health and wellbeing without interference from the government or others. Additionally, the right to health encompasses the right to health protection. This means that the State should protect everyone’s health from any form of harm, including from the effects of air pollution, water pollution, and other environmental hazards. The State should also take steps to address preventable health problems such as hunger and malnutrition. In Washington, all people have the right to health. This includes the right to access health services, the right to good nutrition, and the right to live in a clean and safe environment. This right is protected by multiple state and federal laws.
