How can I adjust my status after getting asylum?

After you receive asylum in Virginia, you can apply to adjust your status to that of a lawful permanent resident. This means you could apply for a green card and become a permanent resident of the United States. You must have one year of continuous presence in the United States before applying for adjustment of status. This means you must continuously remain in the U.S. for one year from the date you were granted asylum. In order to apply for adjustment of status, you will file Form I-485 with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). This form is the Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status. You must also submit the following documents: a valid passport and two passport-sized photographs; Form I-94 (Arrival/Departure Record); evidence of your asylum status; evidence of work authorization; and Form I-693 (Medical Examination of Aliens Seeking Adjustment of Status). In some cases, you may also need to provide evidence of financial support and other information. Once you have filed your application, USCIS will determine your eligibility for adjustment of status. There may be additional steps and paperwork requirements depending on your individual circumstances. If you meet the initial requirements and your application is granted, you will receive a green card and become a permanent resident of the United States.
