What is the R-1 visa?
The R-1 visa is a type of employment-based visa for religious workers who are sponsored by a religious organization. This type of visa is available to those who meet certain criteria related to their religious activities, such as ministers, professional religious workers, and those employed in a religious vocation or occupation. The R-1 visa is a nonimmigrant visa and applicants must demonstrate that they plan to leave the United States at the end of their authorized stay. In order to qualify for an R-1 visa in Washington, applicants must show that they are coming to the United States as a minister or in a religious vocation or occupation. They must also show that they are a member of a religious denomination or organization with a bona fide non-profit religious organization in the United States, and that the organization employs them to work in a religious vocation or occupation. In addition, applicants for the R-1 visa must show that they have been a member of their religious denomination for at least two years prior to applying for their visa. They must also demonstrate their ability to support themselves and any dependents during their stay in the United States, as well as show that they have a residence abroad that they have no intention of abandoning. Once in the United States, R-1 visa holders can stay for up to five years if their visa is initially approved for three years. An extension for another two years can be granted, but extensions past five years are not possible. This visa is not renewable, and the applicant must leave the United States and apply for a new visa when they wish to return.
