What is an I-485 Adjustment of Status application?
An I-485 Adjustment of Status application is a form submitted to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). This form is used to allow individuals who have entered the United States legally or illegally to become lawful permanent residents. The I-485 allows a person to adjust their status from an immigrant visa holder or a nonimmigrant visa holder to a permanent resident. The I-485 form is used in conjunction with other forms as a part of the application process. In California, applicants need to submit the following in order to apply for an Adjustment of Status: Form I-485, Form I-765 (Application for Employment Authorization), Form I-864 (Affidavit of Support), Form I-131 (Application for Travel Document), and supporting documents detailing your identity and eligibility. The I-485 Adjustment of Status application is an important part of the U.S. immigration law and allows eligible persons to become permanent residents. It allows individuals who entered the U.S. legally or illegally to apply for a green card and establish themselves as a resident of the United States.
