What is an I-485 Adjustment of Status application?

An I-485 Adjustment of Status application is a form used by individuals wishing to become legal permanent residents of the United States. This application is typically used by immigrants who are already in the United States and wish to remain, as opposed to those who are applying for a visa to enter the country. The application requires the applicant to provide proof of the following: valid immigrant status, relationship to a U.S. citizen, or lawful permanent resident, current employment in Washington State, a valid passport, and evidence of financial support. Applicants must also continue to meet all of the requirements of the immigration law throughout their application process. If approved, the applicant will receive a Green Card, granting them legal permanent residence. The Green Card makes the applicant eligible to live, work, and travel in the United States. Additionally, the applicant may be eligible for Washington State employment benefits and services, including health care and in-state tuition. I-485 Adjustment of Status applications are an important tool for immigrants to remain in the United States. Without them, many would be unable to become legal permanent residents and benefit from the numerous rights and opportunities granted by their status.
