What is a consular processing?
Consular processing is a two-step process for obtaining a visa to enter the United States. It begins with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) approving an immigrant visa petition. Once the petition is approved, the individual must complete consular processing at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate in their home country. During this step, the individual must provide biometric information, such as fingerprints, and obtain a medical exam. The final step is an interview at the Embassy or Consulate, where a consular officer will review the individual’s paperwork, ask questions, and look for fraud. Once the consular officer is satisfied that all requirements are met, the individual will be issued a visa to enter the U.S. In Washington, employers must abide by federal immigration laws, including those related to consular processing. Employers must be aware of their responsibilities and ensure that employees comply with all requirements, such as obtaining visas and work permits. Failure to abide by immigration laws can result in penalties, so it is important to stay up to date on all relevant laws.
