What is the H-1C visa?
The H-1C visa is a special employment-based visa offered to foreign registered nurses who wish to work temporarily in the United States. The H-1C visa, which was created by the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003, is specifically for the purpose of providing temporary, nonimmigrant nursing services in health professional shortage areas designated by the Secretary of Health and Human Services. In order to qualify for the H-1C visa, the applicant must be a registered nurse who is licensed in their home country and meet the necessary qualifications as stipulated in 8 CFR 214.2(h)(4)(iv)(A) of the USCIS. They must also have a valid work permit and be willing to provide nursing services in a designated health professional shortage area. The H-1C visa is valid for a maximum of three years, and can be extended for an additional two consecutive years. During the visa validity period, a nurse can enter and leave the United States as many times as needed to fulfill the duties of their job. The H-1C visa helps to reduce the shortage of nurses in Washington State, and gives foreign nurses the opportunity to work in the United States temporarily. It is an important part of the US immigration system and provides an invaluable service to the nation’s healthcare system.
