What is a green card lottery?

A green card lottery is a program in the United States that awards immigrant visas, also known as green cards, to applicants chosen at random from a pool of applicants. The program is administered by the U.S. Department of State and is aimed at diversifying the immigrant population in the country. In Massachusetts, family members of those who already hold U.S. permanent residency may be eligible to apply for a green card lottery. This includes spouses, children under the age of 21, unmarried sons and daughters who are over 21 years of age, and parents of U.S. citizens over the age of 21. The green card lottery application process begins with submitting an online entry form that includes basic personal information, such as name, date of birth, place of birth, and email address. The Department of State then randomly selects a certain number of entries from the pool of applicants. Those selected are then invited to apply for an immigrant visa. The process requires submitting additional affidavits and documents, such as a birth certificate, marriage certificate, and passport. Successful applicants are issued a green card, which serves as evidence of permanent U.S. residence and gives holders the ability to obtain federal benefits and work legally in the United States. Applicants who are not selected in the lottery may reapply the following year. It is important to note that the green card lottery is very competitive, and selection is not guaranteed.
