What is an F-1 OPT STEM extension?

An F-1 OPT STEM Extension is a type of immigration benefit designed to extend the amount of time that a student in the United States can stay in the country for additional work experience after completion of a degree program. The F-1 OPT STEM Extension is available to students who are currently, or were previously, enrolled in a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) degree program at an accredited university in the state of Virginia. The extension allows the student to stay and work in the United States for up to 24 additional months beyond the standard 12-month post-completion time limit. The additional work experience gained during this time can be helpful for career development and is also beneficial to employers as it helps to fill workforce shortages in the STEM fields. In order to be eligible for an F-1 OPT STEM Extension, students must have an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) and must have completed a full course of study in the degree program. Additionally, the STEM degree program must be listed on the STEM Designated Degree Program list.
