What is the process for becoming a U.S. citizen?

The process for becoming a U.S. citizen in California is very similar to the process for becoming a citizen in the rest of the United States. Generally, there are five main steps to take. The first step is to apply for a visa or green card that will grant you access to the United States and California. This is done by filing an application for permanent residence, or a Form I-485. After you have been approved, you may then file an application for naturalization. You must also submit your biometrics, including fingerprints and photographs. The second step is to demonstrate your knowledge of the English language and U.S. government and history. During the naturalization interview, a USCIS officer will ask you questions about U.S. customs, laws, and language. You must pass this test in order to get approved for U.S. citizenship. The third step is to prove your continuous residence in the U.S. In order to become a citizen in California, you must have been a permanent resident in the U.S. for at least five years. You must also have been physically present in the U.S. for at least two and a half years out of the five years prior to the application. The fourth step is to attend a citizenship interview and be prepared to answer questions about your application, background, and U.S. government and history. This usually takes place at a USCIS field office in California. The fifth and final step is to take the Oath of Allegiance. This is the formal process that makes you a U.S. citizen. At a naturalization ceremony, you will read aloud the Oath of Allegiance and pledge your loyalty to the United States. Then, you will receive your Certificate of Naturalization, and you will officially be a U.S. citizen.
