How do I apply for asylum in the U.S.?

If you are seeking asylum in the United States, you must first apply through the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). You will need to submit a Form I-589, Application for Asylum and for Withholding of Removal, and other supporting evidence. In Washington, the USCIS Seattle Field Office is the closest office for filing. When you submit your application, you will be scheduled for an interview at the USCIS Field Office and will need to bring proof of your identity, your application and supporting documents. During the interview, an immigration officer will ask questions about why you are seeking asylum and your eligibility for asylum under the Immigration and Nationality Act. You may also be required to take a medical exam and other tests, depending on the particular circumstances of your case. If granted asylum, you will be able to live and work in the United States temporarily unless the Department of Homeland Security decides to grant you permanent residence. It is important to note that in order to qualify for asylum, you must demonstrate that you have a reasonable fear of future persecution in your home country based on your race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion. It is also important to note that asylum applications are considered on a case-by-case basis.
