What is an immigrant visa?

An immigrant visa is a type of legal document that allows a person to immigrate to the United States on a permanent basis, or to gain permanent residence status. In Virginia, an immigrant visa can be applied for to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). This visa is often required for people who want to move to the United States to work, study, or live permanently. To obtain an immigrant visa, the applicant must demonstrate that they meet the eligibility requirements and have a valid reason for wanting to immigrate to the United States. The individual must submit a variety of documents to the USCIS, including proof of identity, financial security, and other pertinent information. The USCIS may also request medical and criminal background checks and a language test to ensure the applicant meets the necessary requirements. Upon approval of the application and the issuance of the immigrant visa, the individual will be allowed to enter the United States permanently and apply for a green card. The recipient of the immigrant visa is then allowed to live and work in the United States and eventually become a naturalized citizen.
