In the state of New Jersey, labor laws are in place to regulate various aspects of industrial relations between employers and employees. The major topics regulated by labor laws include wages, hours, working conditions, labor unions, workplace safety, and non-discrimination practices. With regards to wages, New Jersey labor laws specify minimum wages that employers must pay to employees, maximum overtime pay, and any other wage and salary requirements. For example, the current minimum wage in New Jersey is $12 per hour. Hours of work are also addressed by labor laws. Employers must ensure that they do not require employees to work excessive hours. Additionally, employers must pay employees for any overtime work over 40 hours per week, in accordance with the labor laws. Labor laws also regulate the working conditions in which employees must work. Employers must provide a safe and healthy work environment and ensure that any potential workplace hazards are addressed and eliminated. Labor unions are also regulated by labor laws. Employers must recognize and engage in collective bargaining activities with any union representing employees in the workplace. Finally, non-discrimination in the workplace is an important topic addressed by labor laws. Employers are not allowed to discriminate against employees on the basis of factors such as race, gender, religion, or nationality.
