What is the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD)?
The International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) is an international legal instrument that was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2006. It is the first comprehensive international treaty to protect the rights of persons with disabilities. The CRPD ensures that people with disabilities have the same rights and freedoms as everyone else, including the right to be treated equally and with dignity, to live independently, to participate in public life, to access justice and to be free from discrimination. The CRPD also provides a number of practical measures that states must take to ensure that persons with disabilities have access to quality education, sports and leisure activities, health care and social services. In California, the CRPD has been adopted and implemented through state and local governments and private organizations. The California Department of Rehabilitation works to ensure that people with disabilities have access to employment and educational opportunities. The California State University system has adopted the CRPD as a policy and provides accommodations to ensure that persons with disabilities have equal access to its programs and activities. A number of other organizations, including the California Council on Developmental Disabilities and the California Foundation for Independent Living Centers, also advocate for the implementation of the CRPD and other international conventions related to the rights of persons with disabilities.
