What is the International Law of the Sea?
International Law of the Sea is a body of law that governs activities of states and other entities within the ocean. This includes activities such as navigation, fishing, marine resource exploitation, and pollution prevention. This law is part of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which was established in 1982. In California, International Law of the Sea has been codified in the California Code of Regulations. This gives Californians the right to enjoy and use the resources of adjacent waters, such as rivers, lakes, and the ocean, subject to the laws governing them. The regulations also provide protection for marine life and the environment. The International Law of the Sea deals with rights and responsibilities of states with regard to their use of the ocean. It also sets out rules for environmental conservation and management of marine resources. These include the conservation of biological diversity and the restriction of harmful activities such as dumping of waste or oil. This law also sets out the rights of coastal states with regard to the adjacent waters and their use in exploration, exploitation and conservation of resources. It stipulates the duties of coastal states to protect wildlife, habitats, and other resources, as well as to ensure the sustainable use of the ocean. It also states the rights of foreign nations and other entities to use the ocean for activities such as fishing, research, and navigation.
