What is the International Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)?

The International Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is an international legal agreement that was enacted in 1992 to promote conservation of biological diversity and the sustainable use of its components. The objective of the CBD is to promote conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, which includes plant and animal species, genetic resources, and habitats. The CBD has been ratified by more than 190 countries, including the United States and New Jersey, and over 160 countries are parties to the Convention. The CBD is composed of three main elements: the conservation of biodiversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the use of genetic resources. Conservation is achieved by the management of species, habitats, and ecological processes; the sustainable use of components involves the sustainable use of the resources and their contribution to human well-being; and the equitable sharing of benefits involves ensuring that countries, indigenous people, companies, and other stakeholders access legal and economic benefits derived from the use of genetic resources. The CBD also recognizes the importance of access to resources and the sharing of traditional knowledge between states and indigenous communities. In addition, it promotes cooperation among states in matters such as research, monitoring, education, and training. Through the CBD, all parties are committed to protecting the world’s biodiversity, as well as the local habitats and species, so as to enable sustainable management of natural resources and the sustainability of healthy ecosystems.
