What is the World Health Organization (WHO)?
The World Health Organization (WHO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that is dedicated to international public health. WHO was founded in 1947 and is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. The organization works to promote and coordinate global efforts to improve health, particularly for the poorest and most vulnerable populations, and to contain the spread of infectious diseases. In North Carolina, the WHO works with partners at the local, state, and national levels to monitor and respond to health threats, such as pandemics and emerging infectious diseases. It also works to assess, monitor, and prevent risks and effects of environmental hazards, such as air and water pollution. WHO is also actively engaged in raising public health standards in North Carolina through technical support and capacity building.
