The International Convention on the Non-Applicability of Statutory Limitations to War Crimes and Crimes against Humanity (NTSC) is a treaty that helps ensure the perpetrators of war crimes and crimes against humanity are held accountable for their actions. This treaty eliminates the possibility of these crimes being subject to a statute of limitations, meaning those responsible are not able to evade justice by using the excuse that the crime was committed too long ago. The treaty was created in 1968 and has since been applied in international tribunals such as the International Criminal Court, ad hoc tribunals such as the International Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda, and the special tribunals set up in Sierra Leone and East Timor. This means that any war crimes or crimes against humanity committed in these countries, no matter how far in the past, can be pursued in a court of law. In the US state of Oregon, the NTSC is recognized and provides victims of these heinous crimes the assurance that their offenders are held accountable regardless of how long ago the crime was committed. As long as the relevant evidence still exists, justice can still be sought.
