What is the International Convention to Combat Desertification (CCD)?
The International Convention to Combat Desertification (CCD) is an international agreement that was adopted in 1994 and seeks to address desertification and mitigate its effects. This agreement is legally binding for all countries that have signed it. The CCD defines desertification as “land degradation in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas resulting from various factors, including climatic variations and human activities.” The CCD sets out objectives for countries to achieve in order to combat desertification, such as preventing and reversing desertification by implementing sustainable land management practices and enhancing the resilience of affected ecosystems. It also encourages countries to share resources and technical know-how in order to support each other in their efforts. The agreement provides a framework for international cooperation, as well as encourages government-level collaboration. In California, the CCD has been a focal point for environmental protection efforts. The state has provided over $12 million in funding for research and development related to combatting desertification. Numerous organizations have also been established in California to promote awareness of the CCD and its goals. In addition, conferences, lectures, and other public events have been organized to educate the public on the importance of the CCD and its aims.
