What are the international norms on the Law of Armed Conflict?

The Law of Armed Conflict, sometimes referred to as international humanitarian law, is a set of standards that govern the use of force during armed conflicts. These standards are designed to minimize the suffering of those directly involved in a conflict, particularly civilians, as well as to limit the destruction of property. In international law, there are a number of norms that have been adopted to govern the conduct of armed forces during times of war. These norms include the principle of distinction, which requires combatants to distinguish between military targets and non-combatants; the principle of proportionality, which requires that a military only use force that is proportional to the threat; and the principle of humanity, which demands that combatants treat prisoners of war in a humane manner. In addition, the Law of Armed Conflict recognizes the sanctity of health care workers and facilities during an armed conflict. Health care workers are prohibited from taking part in hostilities and must be allowed to provide humanitarian assistance to those affected by conflict. Medical units and related infrastructure must also be respected and should not be targeted. The Law of Armed Conflict is an important part of international law, as it seeks to protect the rights of combatants and non-combatants alike. It is also an important part of international law in Oregon, as its values and principles are often incorporated into state and local laws. Adherence to these principles is a fundamental responsibility of all states and is important for protecting civilians and maintaining stability during times of war.
