What is the International Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (CWC)?
The International Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (CWC) is an international treaty that sets a global prohibition on the use, stockpiling, production, and transfer of chemical weapons. The treaty was adopted in 1997 and signed by more than 170 countries, including the United States and countries in the European Union. The purpose of the CWC is to eliminate the threat of chemical weapons in armed conflict and to prevent their use in international disputes. The treaty requires that all states parties to the treaty destroy their stockpiles of chemical weapons, prohibit their production and transfer, and accept international monitoring and inspections. It also requires that states parties provide information to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), which was created to administer the treaty. The CWC is being implemented in Virginia, the United States, and the rest of the world. In Virginia, the treaty is enforced through the Commonwealth’s Department of Environmental Quality, which is responsible for ensuring the state is meeting its obligations under the CWC. The Department also works with the OPCW to monitor Virginia’s compliance with the treaty. The CWC is an important step in promoting global security by restricting the use of chemical weapons and prohibiting their possession and transfer. Virginia and the United States are committed to meeting their obligations under the CWC, and thereby helping to strengthen global peace and security.
