About International Law

International law is the law that governs relationships between states and other entities (e.g., corporations, international organizations) with interests across international boundaries. It is a complex and evolving body of law which takes several forms. These forms include treaties, customary rules, general principles of law, judicial decisions and scholarly writings. In general, international law applies to a broad range of activities, including relations between states, international commerce, international organizations, the use of military force, the protection of human rights, the protection of the environment, and the international rule of law. International law is generally found in treaties, including multilateral (more than two nations) and bilateral (two nations) treaties. It is also a source of customary international law, which comes from the practice of states which becomes the law between them. General principles of law are also a source of international law, which are found particularly in the writings of scholars and in judicial decisions of international and national courts. International organizations, such as the United Nations and its specialized agencies, also play an important role in creating international law. States, through their representatives, are members of and participate in the work of these organizations. Whether through signing treaties, participating in meetings, or adopting resolutions on certain issues, states are constantly negotiating and agreeing to rules and regulations found in international law. Finally, courts around the world, including the International Court of Justice, are responsible for interpreting and applying the various rules of international law, as well as for settling disputes between states. Hiring a knowledgeable and experienced lawyer who has an understanding of international law is essential if you are a business, non-profit organization, or individual looking to enter or expand into the global market.
