What is the International Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (CG)?
The International Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (CG) is a United Nations Convention signed in Washington in 1948. This important piece of international law was created to establish and recognize the crime of genocide and to hold those responsible for committing it accountable. The CG defines genocide as any acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group. Those acts include killing members of the group, causing serious bodily or mental harm to the members of the group, deliberately inflicting conditions of life calculated to bring about the group’s physical destruction in whole or in part, imposing measures intended to prevent births among the group, or forcibly transferring children of the group to another group. The CG also outlines prosecution and other enforcement measures such as the duty of states to prevent and punis these crimes, extradition, and the establishment of an international criminal court, among other things. With this document, the United Nations took a major step in defining and criminalizing genocide, thus providing a better chance of protection and justice to the victims of such crimes.
