What is the difference between public and private international law?

Public and private international law are two distinct branches of international law. Public international law is a set of rules governing relationships between countries, sovereign states, international organizations and other public actors, including individuals and corporate entities. This type of law is created to regulate the international activities of these entities, with the aim of providing order and stability to the international relations. Private international law, on the other hand, deals with the relationships between private parties such as businesses and individuals in different countries. Private international law resolves disputes and sets rules for the conduct of individuals, organizations and businesses in cross-border activities, including contracts and disputes among private actors. In Washington, public international law is largely made up of treaties, international organizations and customary international law, while private international law is mainly contained in contracts, conventions, and laws enacted by the state. Washington State also has its own laws governing matters such as intellectual property, banking and immigration. Public international law is important for countries such as the United States, as it helps them to maintain friendly relationships with other countries and organizations. On the other hand, private international law helps organizations and individuals navigate the complexities of international contracts and disputes.
