What delivery methods are available for medical marijuana?

In Virginia, there are three main delivery methods that are approved for medical marijuana: inhalation, sublingual, and topical. Inhalation is the method of inhaling the marijuana vapors or smoke through a device such as a pipe, bong, or vaporizer. Inhaling provides fast-acting relief and is the most common method of consuming medical marijuana. Sublingual delivery is a method of using a liquid form of marijuana that is held under the tongue for rapid absorption into the bloodstream. This method is fast-acting as well and is often used by those who want to avoid the side-effects of inhalation. Topical applications involve products such as creams, salves, and oils that are applied directly to the skin. This method is often used for localized relief and can provide long-lasting relief. The Virginia Board of Pharmacy is the only agency authorized to provide and regulate medical marijuana products in the state. Patients and caregivers must obtain written certification from a doctor registered with the Board before they can access medical marijuana products. Additionally, patients and caregivers must register with the state and must obtain their medical marijuana products from one of the two approved dispensaries in the state.
