What are the laws related to sex selection in the United States?
In the United States, sex selection laws vary from state to state. In Washington, the only restriction related to sex selection is a ban on non-medical sex selection abortions, which was passed in 1998. This law makes it illegal for an abortion provider to knowingly perform an abortion with the intent to select the sex of the unborn child. While sex selection abortions are generally prohibited in Washington, there are some exceptions. For example, if a woman’s health is in danger or the fetus has a significant genetic abnormality, the prohibition does not apply. Additionally, the law makes no mention of pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), which is a procedure that allows parents to select the sex of their unborn child through in vitro fertilization. The United States does not have a federal law prohibiting sex selection, although some states have enacted their own laws on the issue. To date, 28 states have introduced laws related to sex selection, most of which ban non-medical sex selection abortions. These laws are generally in place to protect the rights of unborn children. The issue of sex selection remains a controversial topic in the United States and around the world. While many argue that laws banning sex selection in the United States are necessary to protect unborn children, others question the morality of such laws, saying they prevent a woman from making informed decisions about her own body. As the debate continues, it is important to remember that laws related to sex selection are designed to protect everyone’s rights and should be respected.
