What do I need to do to be approved for Social Security Disability benefits?

In order to be approved for Social Security Disability Benefits in Virginia, you must meet certain criteria. The Social Security Administration will consider an application if an individual can prove that they have a disabling medical condition that has lasted, or is expected to last, at least 12 months or result in death. In order to be approved, you must provide evidence that your medical condition meets the criteria of the Social Security Administration list of impairments known as the “Blue Book.” These criteria are very specific and include medical evidence such as: tests, medical records, and statements from medical sources. You must also be able to show that your medical disorder prevents you from doing any kind of work, including skilled, semi-skilled, or unskilled work. To do this, you must provide information on the physical, mental, and psychological limitations that limit your ability to work. Additionally, you must provide evidence of your income and work history for the past 15 years. If you have been unable to work for at least 12 months due to your medical condition, you may still be eligible for benefits. Finally, you must complete an application that includes information on your medical condition and your work history. Once you submit your application, a Social Security representative will review the provided evidence and will decide if you are eligible for Social Security Disability Benefits.
