What is a functional capacity evaluation?

A functional capacity evaluation (FCE) is an important tool used in Social Security Disability Law in California. It is a comprehensive examination of an individual’s abilities and limitations, conducted by a medical professional. This evaluation allows an individual’s abilities and limitations to be assessed and documented in order to determine their capability to work. The FCE involves a physical and mental assessment of an individual’s abilities, such as standing, walking, lifting, sitting, and manipulations. Additionally, the test may evaluate an individual’s ability to perform work-related activities, such as memory, concentration, stamina, and problem-solving abilities. The results of the test are recorded and used to determine an individual’s eligibility for Social Security Disability. This information is then used to make decisions about whether or not an individual is able to engage in substantial gainful activity. In other words, FCEs are used to determine if an individual is able to work or not. Overall, a functional capacity evaluation is a comprehensive evaluation that helps to gather information about an individual’s abilities and limitations. This information is then used to determine an individual’s eligibility for Social Security Disability.
