What is an Agent Orange claim and how do I file one?

An Agent Orange claim is a special type of claim for Veterans benefits related to illnesses caused by exposure to Agent Orange. Agent Orange is the code-name for a toxic chemical herbicide used by the U.S. military during the Vietnam War. In California, the California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet) administers claims related to Agent Orange. In order to file an Agent Orange claim, you must complete and submit an Application for Benefits (Form CDVA 10-10). This form is available on the CalVet website, or you can pick up a copy from your local CalVet office. The form must be completed in full and must include details about your illness and any other relevant medical information. You must also provide a valid military identification card, your VA records, and proof of your service in Vietnam and/or Korea during the time the U.S. military was using Agent Orange. Once the form is completed and submitted, the CalVet will review the claim and determine if you qualify for benefits. You may be eligible for a number of different types of benefits, including service-connected disability compensation, as well as medical and health care benefits. If approved, you will be notified of your benefits and receive an award letter. It is important to note that filing an Agent Orange claim in California can take 8-12 months to complete, so you should plan accordingly. If you have any questions or need assistance completing the claim, you can contact your local CalVet office or call the Veteran Resource Hotline at (800) 952-5626.
