What are the restrictions on working hours for minors?

In Pennsylvania, minors (under 18 years of age) have restrictions on the number of hours that they are able to work. The laws are “designed to protect minors from exploitation in the workplace.” Minors are not allowed to work in hazardous occupations, such as operating heavy machinery or working with hazardous materials. Additionally, for those who are 16 or 17 years old, they cannot work between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. Further, minors under 16 are not allowed to work more than 8 hours on any day, and no more than 48 hours in any one week. When school is not in session, minors under 16 have less restrictions. During these times, they can work up to 9 hours in any given day; however, they must not work more than 48 hours in any one week. Finally, minors who are 14 or 15 years old are restricted to 3 hours of work per day on school days, and up to 8 hours on non-school days. They are not allowed to work before 7 a.m. or after 7 p.m. on school days, or before 7 a.m. or after 9 p.m. on non-school days. By following these restrictions on working hours for minors, employers can ensure that young employees are not taken advantage of in the workplace.
