What are the restrictions on paying workers under the age of 18?
In Arizona, employers must adhere to the wage and hour law, which sets restrictions on the payment of workers under the age of 18. All Arizona employers must obtain a Certificate of Age from the minor in order to hire them. A minor may not be employed or permitted to work in any occupation which, by its nature, is injurious to the health, safety, or morals of minors or which is particularly hazardous to life and limb. In addition, minors who are 14 or 15 years old cannot work more than 4 hours or 20 hours per week when school is in session, and no more than 8 hours a day or 40 hours a week during school breaks and holidays. Minors between 16 and 18 years old have no limitations placed on the number of hours they can work. Minors who are under 16 years old must also be provided with a meal period of at least 30 minutes when they work more than 5 consecutive hours. They cannot work before 7am or after 7pm, with certain exceptions such as when working in the entertainment industry or for agricultural purposes. Finally, minors must be paid the minimum wage of $12.15 per hour, with some exemptions from the minimum wage rate for certain jobs. These restrictions are in place to protect the safety and wellbeing of minors and ensure that they are not taken advantage of by their employers. Employers must comply with all Arizona wage and hour laws in order to avoid penalties and fines.
