How are bonuses calculated when employees are paid by the hour?

Bonuses that are calculated based on hourly wages are calculated in the same way as regular hourly wages. To calculate an employee’s bonus, the employer must multiply the employee’s regular hourly rate by the number of hours the employee worked. The total of this calculation is the amount of the employee’s regular wages. The employer must then add the amount of any bonus pay to the regular wages. In Mississippi, there are wage and hour laws that regulate overtime pay for employees. Employers are required to pay employees one and a half times their regular rate for all hours worked over forty in one week. However, employers can still pay their employees bonuses in addition to their regular wages. These bonuses can be based on an hourly rate or a percentage of an employee’s regular wage. Under Mississippi law, any bonuses that are calculated based on hourly wages must also be included in the employee’s overtime pay calculation. For example, if an employee worked 45 hours in one week and earned a bonus of $10, the employer must calculate the overtime pay as if the bonus had been included in the employee’s regular wage. The employee’s regular wage plus the bonus would then be multiplied by one and a half to get the total overtime pay. Bonuses can be a great way for employers to show appreciation and reward employees for their hard work. However, employers should be sure to follow Mississippi’s wage and hour laws when calculating bonuses based on hourly wages. If employers fail to do so, they could face penalties or fines.
