What is a schedule award?

A schedule award is a type of compensation under Washington’s workers comp law. It’s a payment for permanent partial disability, which occurs when an employee is unable to continue employment because of an injury or illness. When this happens, a schedule award is given as a one-time, lump-sum payment to the employee. This payment is calculated based on the severity of the injury or illness, the reduced earning capacity of the employee, and the number of weeks they have been disabled. The amount an employee can receive is determined by a formula set by the state of Washington. This formula considers the body part affected, the severity of the injury, and the employee’s age, occupation, and pre-injury wages. If an employee is awarded a schedule award, they are no longer eligible to receive any other compensation for their injury or illness. The amount an employee receives could also be reduced if they are found to have contributed to their injury or illness.
