What are the requirements for aircraft fuel systems?
In order for aircraft to operate safely, their fuel systems must comply with several regulations set by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). In Utah, the Utah Division of Air Quality (DAQ) has adopted the same standards. The FAA and DAQ have rules for approving aircraft fuel systems based on its type and use. Generally, all aircraft fuel systems must have reliable fuel-proofing and protective covering. They must also be equipped with overflow protection, fuel filters, fuel tanks, pumps, and fuel gauges. Each fuel tank must have a filler cap that meets the requirements of the FAA and DAQ. All fuel tanks must be positively vented with an air induction system that prevents fuel leakage. An auxillary tank overflow system must be installed to ensure that fuel does not overflow when transferring fuel. Fuel filters must meet the requirements of the FAA and DAQ and must be installed and maintained properly. The fuel filters must be designed to prevent contaminants from entering the fuel system. The fuel pump must be designed to provide the right pressure and volume of fuel for the aircraft engine. It must also be designed to provide a positive shut-off to prevent fuel leakage. Finally, the fuel gauge must be accurate and must be checked and calibrated regularly. The fuel gauge must display the correct amount of fuel in the tank and must be equipped with a low-fuel warning system. Overall, aircraft fuel systems must comply with the FAA and DAQ regulations in order to maintain safety and efficiency. By following these guidelines, aircraft are able to fly safely and efficiently while reducing the risk of breakdowns and accidents.
