Can a debt collector tell me to pay more than I owe on a debt?
In Mississippi, debt collectors are prohibited from telling you to pay more than you owe on a debt. This is a violation of the Mississippi Consumer Protection Act, which protects consumers from unfair and deceptive practices by debt collectors. Under the Act, debt collectors cannot misrepresent the amount of debt owed, or make false statements in an effort to collect more money than is due. If a debt collector is attempting to collect more money than you owe, you can report them to the Mississippi Office of the Attorney General. The Attorney General can investigate and take action against the debt collector, which may include a fine and/or an order for the collector to stop their activities. It is important to note that debt collectors are also prohibited from engaging in unfair practices, such as contacting you repeatedly without reasonable cause or making false threats about what they can do if you do not pay the debt. It is important to remember that you have rights when dealing with debt collectors in Mississippi. If you believe that a debt collector is trying to collect more money than you owe, you can contact the Mississippi Office of the Attorney General for help.
